CfP: PhD Workshop on Empirical Microeconomics @ Bolzano

The University of Bolzano organizes a workshop on empirical microeconomics in Bolzano on October 18-19, 2019.

The workshop aims to bring together outstanding PhD and postdoctoral scholars in Empirical Microeconomics to discuss their recent research. The workshop features long presentations (30–40 minutes) and provides an opportunity for young researchers to share and receive feedback on their work in a friendly and informal environment. We welcome submissions of unpublished papers and extended abstracts for work in progress. Please submit your work by August 16, 2019 via the workshop website.

CfP: Workshop on Inequality, Education, and Intergenerational Mobility @ Hamburg

The Joachim Herz Foundation kindly invites submissions to their workshop on inequality, education, and intergenerational mobility in Hamburg on December 12-13, 2019. Both structural and reduced-form papers are welcome and one of the goals of the workshop is indeed to create interactions between researchers of these different groups. Please submit papers or extended abstracts by September 15, 2019 by sending an email

Das Institut für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung (IAB) in Nürnberg sucht eine/n Wissenschaftliche/n Mitarbeiter/-in (Doktorand/in) für den Forschungsbereich D2 (Bildung, Qualifizierung und Erwerbsverläufe) – Projektgruppe Nationales Bildungspanel (NEPS): Bildung im Erwachsenenalter und lebenslanges Lernen, befristet bis zum 31.12.2022, mit 65% der Arbeitszeit.

Stellenprofil:

  • Konzeption und Durchführung der großangelegten längsschnittorientierten Befragung.
  • Anpassung und Weiterentwicklung von standardisierten NEPS-Fragebögen zur Erfassung des Lebensverlaufs und Einbettung neuer Fragebogeninhalte in einen schlüssigen Gesamtfragebogen.
  • Testung, Feldkontrolle und Feldsteuerung der Befragung.
  • Im Rahmen dieser Doktorandenstelle entwickeln Sie Forschungsfragen für Ihre Dissertation, die Sie möglichst mit den Daten der Erwachsenenbefragung (NEPS-SC6) erforschen. Diese können sich z.B. thematisch mit Weiterbildung und lebenslangem Lernen oder mit einem von Ihnen gewählten Thema der empirischen Bildungs- und Arbeitsmarktforschung beschäftigen.
  • Neben diesen Aufgaben präsentieren und publizieren Sie – vielfach in Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Teammitgliedern – inhaltliche und methodische Projektergebnisse für Wissenschaft und Fachöffentlichkeit bei nationalen und internationalen Fachtagungen.

Anforderungen:

  • Hochschulabschluss (bevorzugte Fachrichtung Soziologie, Sozialökonomik oder Ökonomie mit empirischer Ausrichtung)
  • Vertiefte Kenntnisse in einem einschlägigen Fachgebiet der empirischen Bildungs- und Arbeitsmarktforschung
  • Fundierte Kenntnisse in der soziologischen bzw. ökonomischen Forschung zu Lebensverläufen, Bildung und Arbeitsmarkt
  • Vertiefte Kenntnisse empirischer Forschungsmethoden, statistischer Analyseverfahren und einschlägiger Programmpakete (STATA)
  • Idealerweise fundierte Kenntnisse der quantitativen Datenerhebung
  • Ausgeprägte Bereitschaft zur Teamarbeit, zur interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit und zur engen Kooperation mit Partnereinrichtungen, inklusive hoher Reisebereitschaft
  • Fundierte Kenntnisse von Präsentations- und Moderationstechniken
  • Fundierte Kenntnisse relevanter MS-Office-Anwendungen
  • Englisch (Kenntnisniveau B2 gem. GeR)

CfP: Conference on Adverse Health Conditions and Labor Market Policies @ Amsterdam, March 19-20, 2020

We are pleased to announce a Conference on “Adverse Health Conditions and Labor Market Policies”. This conference is a joint initiative of the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA) and UWV (the Dutch Employee Insurance Agency). The aim is to bring together academic presentations and policy discussion about the implementation of academic insights. The academic part will cover March 19 and ends around lunch-time on March 20. After that, the program continues with a policy discussion about evidence-based work in the practice of re-integration. The conference dinner takes place on the evening of March 19.

The keynote lecture will be delivered by Knut Røed (Ragnar Frisch Centre for Economic Research, University of Oslo and IZA).

The Program Committee invites submissions for at least 10 presentations by academic researchers working on issues related to (partly) disabled and sick-listed workers.

Topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Active labor market policies (ALMP) for individuals with adverse health conditions
  • Profiling and targeting instruments to select individuals into such ALMP
  • Long-term effects of training and other ALMP for these groups
  • Policies to influence the inflow into social security due to sickness or disability
  • Policies to influence sickness and disability focusing on the employer side
  • Health effects of labor market policies
Researchers interested in participating should submit a paper or an extended abstract by Novemver 15, 2019, using our Online Application Form.

Presenters can make their papers available in advance by placing them on the IZA conference website so they can be linked to the preliminary program.

CfP: Ph.D. Workshop on “Perspectives on (Un-)Employment”

The Institute for Employment Research (IAB) invites doctoral students to attend its 12th Ph.D. Workshop  “Perspectives on (Un-)Employment”. The workshop will take place from 23-24 January 2020 at the IAB in Nuremberg, Germany. We welcome Ph.D. students to present their latest research in the field of labor market research.

The keynote speakers this year are:

Prof. David Card (University of California, Berkeley) and

Prof. Arne Kalleberg (Universtiy of North Carolina at Chapel Hill).

Please submit an extended abstract or a full paper in pdf format to IAB.PHD-WORKSHOP@iab.de. The deadline for submission is 13 October 2019.

Deutscher Wirtschaftspreis der Joachim Herz Stiftung zur Ökonomik der Arbeit

2020 richtet sich der Deutsche Wirtschaftspreis der Joachim Herz Stiftung an Wissenschaftler, die im Bereich der Ökonomik der Arbeit forschen und an einer Forschungseinrichtung in Deutschland tätig sind. Der Preis wird in zwei Kategorien vergeben:

  1. Bestes Forschungswerk eines etablierten Wissenschaftlers, dotiert mit 150.000 Euro.
  2. Beste Beiträge von Nachwuchswissenschaftlern, dotiert mit 25.000 Euro (1. Platz), 15.000 Euro (2. Platz) und 10.000 Euro (3.Platz).

In der ersten Kategorie nominiert ein Auswahlkomitee aus renommierten Wissenschaftlern Forscher, die entscheidende Beiträge zur Ökonomik der Arbeit geleistet haben. Das Preiskomitee wählt den Preisträger aus den Nominierungen des Auswahlkomitees.

In der zweiten Kategorie können sich Einzelpersonen oder Forschergruppen auf den Nachwuchsforschungspreis bewerben. Nachwuchsforscher sind Doktoranden, Postdoktoranden und Juniorprofessoren. Das Auswahlkomitee übermittelt die besten Beiträge an das Preiskomitee, das die Preisträger bestimmt.

BeNA Guru Talk #6 took place on July 3 at DIW

The sixth BeNA Guru Talk was held on July 2018 at DIW Berlin. This time the topic was Communication in research in academia.  How important is it to distribute one’s work on Twitter, blogs or in newspapers? What were especially positive or negative experiences? Furthermore we also want to talk about networking and interdisciplinary dialogue. In short, how can researchers make their research known to other researchers and to the public, and what are potential limitations or dangers?

Analia Schlosser (Tel Aviv University), Jan Marcus (DIW and Hamburg University) and Hannes Ullrich (DIW, University of Copenhagen and University of Zurich) joined as our gurus.

The lively panel discussion was followed by an informal get-together.

We are very happy to announce the following great opportunity to learn a new skill:

The Berlin Network of Labor Market Research (BeNA) and the Berlin School of Economics (BSE) with the support of Collaborative Research Center TRR 190 Rationality and Competition are happy to announce that Jann Spiess, Assistant Professor from Stanford Graduate School of Business, will give two courses  on Machine Learning: An Applied Econometric Approach on September 2-4 (BSE) and September 4-6 (BeNA).

The two classes overlap significantly and are not designed to be taken together. Because of the very interactive nature of the course, we can offer the course only to a limited number of participants. Please register for the BeNA course until August 20 by sending an email to skills@labor-research.net.

CfP: Workshop Field-Experiments

The Institute for Employment Research (IAB) and the Labor and Socio-Economic Research Center (LASER) of the University of Erlangen Nuremberg are pleased to announce a workshop on field experiments in policy evaluation taking place on Novemer 21 – 22, 2019 in Nuremberg. The two-day workshop seeks to bring together researchers focusing on policy evaluations using a field experimental design and will feature keynote speeches by Gerard van den Berg (University of Bristol) and Michael Rosholm (University of Aarhus). Studies addressing one of the following fields are particularly welcome:

• Labor economics

• Economics of education

• Health economics
