The IHS – Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna is looking to fill two PhD positions (f/m/d, 30h/week) in the newly established Junior Research Group Skill Demand during Structural Change. Your work at IHS will focus on academic research and policy advice in the field of Labor Economics. As a doctoral researcher, you will be part of a research group investigating the impact of digitalization, ecological transformation, and demographic shifts on labor markets. You will develop your dissertation project within this broader research agenda and contribute to empirical labor market research.
About you
- You have completed a master’s degree in economics or related STEM discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or Quantitative Social Sciences).
- You have strong empirical research skills and experience in econometrics or data science methods.
- You are proficient in statistical programming languages such as Stata, R, or Python.
- You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Your Responsibilities
- Conduct quantitative research in labor economics and analyze large-scale survey, administrative, and unstructured data sources (e.g., job postings).
- Apply econometric and data science methods (e.g., machine learning, natural language processing) to study the implications of structural change on wages, employment, and skill demand.
- Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific conferences to engage with the broader academic and policy community.
IHS offers, among others, flexible working time arrangements and the option for (partial) remote work. The monthly salary for the advertised position is based on the FWF scheme for doctoral candidates and amounts to € 2,684.10 gross for a 30-hour week, paid 14 times per year. The position is to be filled as soon as possible. The initial contract period is 3 years, with the possibility of an extension upon successful internal evaluation.
